THURSDAYS at 12:00 noon Eastern time
Our weekly Torah classes resume in August, as we continue our deep dive into the Book of Numbers (Sefer Bemidbar). Numbers is an extraordinary book, radically mixing literary styles (narratives, laws, poetry, ‘samples’ of other stories and myths) to create a diary of the generation between the Exodus and the arrival in the Promised Land.
After a year of study, we're in the middle of the wilderness saga. This fall we'll explore: my favorite "weird" chapter of Torah, Numbers 21; the surreal story of King Balak and the prophet Bilaam, whose attempts to curse Israel were thwarted; laws and Jewish principles about justice, war, vigilantism, and women's rights; and, throughout, the ways in which tradition found insight for our own spiritual condition: somewhere between the bondage of the past and the fulfilled future on the horizon.
WE WELCOME “DROP INS” - By registering, you’ll receive the Zoom link, but there is no need to commit to every weekly session.
And if you’ve participated in the past, consider yourself already registered. Newcomers are always welcome to join in. Participation and dialogue are encouraged - including occasional breakout discussions - and please turn your Zoom cameras on!
